Creating a Sub Domain for Google Apps
The benefits of creating a Sub-Domain for Google Apps
Creating a sub-domain for your Google Apps installation really opens up some possibilities. If you recently purchased the Premier Edition you can create a sub domain such as; it.domainname.com, and register 50 free Google Apps Standard Edition users. This could be helpful in creating email addresses or sharing contacts, documents or calendar items with your vendors, other companies or certain intranet users. Creating a sub-domain for your Google Apps Premier Edition could also be used within your organization as a different "security domain" to isolate users and resources for different groups within your company or domain.
The steps involved for creating a sub domain for Google Apps follows;
- Register your sub-domain for either a Google Apps Premier Edition or Standard Edition subscription.
This just depends on whether you would like the sub domain to use Google Apps Premier or Standard Edition.
- Verify the Sub-Domain (CNAME) on your DNS Web Host
Create the cname record that Google provides you to verify your sub domain. This is usually something like; fffhgfhgfftfcd.it Don't forget to add the sub domain after the verification cname.
- Add the sub domain MX records on your DNS Hosting Site
You should create a sub-domain in the MX portion of your DNS hosting web site. You would create a record "it.domainname.com" and point it to for example, aspmx.l.google.com with a preference of 10. There are usually 5 or 6 MX preference types for your Google Apps Domain so be sure to check this and add accordingly. This is to ensure email is functioning properly for Gmail.
- Create your users and accounts
Now you're off to the races with your new subdomain.
